Biosphere 1 opened its doors in November 1995. Since then, more than 500,000 visitors have dropped off recyclable materials. This is equivalent to over 50,000 visitors per year.

As of August 2001, over 59,000 tons of materials have been recycled.

  • Approximately 30 tons of newsprint are recycled each month.
  • Approximately 6.6 tons of cardboard are recycled each month.
  • Approximately 35.3 tons of metal are recycled each month.
  • Approximately 2.5 tons of plastic are recycled each month.
  • Approximately 4.5 tons of glass are recycled each month.
  • Approximately 592 tons of brush are recycled each month.
  • Approximately 18 tons of tires are recycled each month.
  • Approximately 347 tons of biosolids are recycled each month.

The Biosphere I Recycle Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. You must present a current City of Texas City water bill to dispose of trash and brush. You do not have to present a water bill if you are only dropping off recyclable items. What's a recyclable item?

The Biosphere does not accept automobile batteries, paint and other toxic or hazardous materials, or roofing materials. The Biosphere follows a city calendar and is closed on all city holidays.
