Back to Recreation and Tourism

The City of Texas City Department of Recreation & Tourism welcomes citizens 55 and older to the Senior Citizens Program.

This program was established in 1977 for citizens age 55 and older. Our program continues today to focus on the needs and well-being of seniors in our community.

The Nessler Center Senior Citizen Program is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (closed on city holidays). The center is one of five Nutrition Sites in Galveston County providing senior citizens with a nutritious meal. (Donations are encouraged.)

Activities include lunch, dominoes, bingo (42 players), arts and crafts, board games, fellowship, movies with popcorn, reading, picnics, field trips and celebrations for special occasions and holidays.

Our staff is eager to serve our senior citizens by listening to their concerns, encouraging positive thinking, and promoting self-esteem. By interacting in all activities, we focus on the needs of the entire group as well as the needs of each of our seniors.

Guest speakers visit our center on a regular basis and provide valuable information on health screenings, counseling, diabetic testing, nutrition, education, referral services, and more.

Exercise is encouraged daily. "Sit and Be Fit" is a slow and easy upper body workout that is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The Lowry Fitness Trail is located nearby and indoor walking around the Wings of Heritage Room is available most mornings.

Lowry Center

Lowry Center membership is offered to our Nessler Center Seniors at a reduced rate. Programs offered for seniors include:

  • "Slow & Easy" aerobics for active seniors, 8 a.m. - 8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday
  • "At Your Own Pace" Indoor daily walking from 6-9 a.m., Monday through Friday
  • "Senior Citizen Water Aerobics" is a low-impact water exercise class for seniors. Classes are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10-11 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m.
